March 2018

I suppose the big news both in general and for me personally is the RetroMobile 2018 show held in Paris France in early February. This massive show is the largest of its type in the world and we have two reports. First, Tony Clark our European Correspondent presents a show overview with his very informed observations: »RetroMobile Tony Clark    and a seond more personal report by myself, "a Canadian Artist in Paris"   »RetroMobile Jay Koka

I reported in December that Tom Fritz, chairman of the Membership Committee had advised that AFAS received a record number of applications for Guest Artist invitations to exhibit in 2018. See    DETOURS    for a review of the final invitation list for 2018. As a reminder, if you are an artist interested in applying for a Guest Artist spot for 2019, your application is due by no later than November this year.   »Review the requirements here  and learn more  » about the Society

I am sorry to report that my friend and colleague Tom Hale has retired from active membership in AFAS. I've known Tom for some thirty years. In fact, Tom and I were Guest Artists and voted in for AFAS membership at the same time in 1989. An excellent painter, his work and his overall contribution to the Society will be missed. We look forward to featuring a retrospective look at Tom's work in an upcoming issue. I ... we all... wish him and his wife Fran the best.

Featured artist profile in this issue is Karl Hugo Mars. The French sculptor works in steel/alloys creating the most fantastic... and fantastical... objects with material sourced from automotive and aviation sources. Throw in some electronics for a multi-media effect that has to be seen live to be fully appreciated. We present a sampling of his work:  »Karl Hugo Mars

Tony Clark presents a report on a recent new Dexter Brown one-man selling exhibition organised by Bonhams auctioneers in their Bond Street, London, England rooms. » Dexter Brown

Don't forget to take a look at our regular   DETOURS feature for bits and pieces of the last 3 months...

A reminder: Our almost constant change in layouts to accommodate ever-changing screens has resulted in the removal of a number of artist feature stories. We have reformatted and relaunched a number of these from the earliest and now gone editions... take a look here: »Archived Artist Stories

Finally, it looks like our "update" issue in December was well received so we plan to do it again with an update in June. Watch for it or better still, sign up for » automatic issue notification.

Thanks for visiting our latest issue. As always, I welcome your comments...
