Welcome to the current issue of the AFAS Journal as we kick-off the 24th Annual AFAS Exhibit at the Pebble Beach Concours. Good reading awaits your attention as follows:
The late Strother MacMinn, who Pebble Beach Concours regulars remember as being the Concours’ Chief Judge, is celebrated in two articles. One is directed to MacMinn the designer and educator, the other, remembrances by AFAS artists who were students of “Mac” at the Art Center. These are truly complimentary stories and pertinent to this year’s exhibit and tribute to Mac as displayed in the AFAS art tent for this show.
Tony Sikorski is our featured AFAS artist this issue. Many of you have met Tony and wife Carol here at Pebble Beach and other shows. Tony shares his life and career adventures, offering a unique insight to the artist and his work. Also, Tony is the first artist to appear on both covers of the same issue – that’s Sikorski art for the Lincoln advertisement on the back cover. Sorry, the original is in a private collection.
Our Continental Correspondent, Tony Clark, has once again provided us with a truly extraordinary bit of historical sleuthing. See his report on what may have been the world’s first Auto Art Show in 1905. |
Before signing off, I want to share a follow- up to the Jim Dietz feature story from last issue on the 509th Parachute Infantry Brigade painting commission and the military art profile on the past and present AFAS members: I recently returned from the Belgium Ardennes where I traveled with members of the General George Patton Museum which is home based at Fort Knox, Kentucky. The Ardennes is Eastern Belgium, the area of the largest battle in Western Europe during World War II. It is known as The Battle of the Bulge. For six days, 16 people traveled by private motor coach through “Patton’s Europe”, visiting significant spots of military and cultural importance.
I traveled with Pebble Beach Concours participants and auto art collectors Fred Guyton, Carl Schneider and Charlie Mong. Needless to say, pretty good company, especially when you add to the mix: retired Lt. General Steven Arnold, who once headed George Patton’s original Third Army and retired Colonel James Patton Totten, the grandson of General George Patton. It was a magnificent experience and a privilege to spend time and share history with such a fine group of soldiers, gentleman, women and really neat people.
Oh yes, one last thing, Jamie Totten and Steve Arnold really liked the Dietz and AFAS Military art, a lot.
