Rochester, Michigan is home of the Dodge-Wilson edifice known as Meadow Brook
Hall. On these grounds, in the summer of 1982 an important auto concours was
held and an automotive art show was included. The art show committee members
were Del DeRees, Dick Teague and Bob Larivee, Sr. DeRees and Teague were auto
styling execs and Larivee was the founder and CEO of Group Promotions, the
premiere custom and hot rod show organization then in operation.
The concours was well received and generated enthusiastic talk amongst the
participating artists. Fate was kind that summer weekend. It had been a
relatively successful show with enthusiastic public reception and art
sales. The
participating artists realized that by coordinating their efforts future auto
art shows could be a viable entity. Discussion began on how to achieve
this. It
was the beginning of the Automotive Fine Arts Society.
The Meadow Brook Concours quickly became the most significant show of its
type
east of the Mississippi.
The Pebble Beach Concours d' Elegance was
recognized as
the most significant US show and one of the top shows internationally. By
this
time, the Automotive Fine Arts Society (AFAS) had been organized; officers
elected, memberships solicited internationally and credits bestowed by
legendary
auto artists Peter Helck, Walter Gotschke, Carlo Demand and John Burgess.
AFAS
had also acquired a willing and savvy mentor.
It was Bob Larivee, Sr. one of the original Meadow Brook art committee
members.
Bob's background in auto show promotion and production, his keen
interest in
Western art, history and cars had given him the ability to be a guide for the
AFAS group. Bob's efforts on behalf of AFAS gained entry to the stage at
Pebble
Beach and The New York International Auto Show at the Jacob Javits Center,
and he
started the art show at the Gilmore Museum, in Michigan, as an AFAS event and
many other venues to come. AFAS had its own Godfather.
We are celebrating a quarter century of auto art exhibitions at the Pebble
Beach
Concours d' Elegance, still the Grand Dame' of U.S. Concours. Alas, it
was
announced that Meadow Brook is no more; it is being renamed and moved to
another
location in the Detroit area. Although never an official AFAS show, many AFAS
artists did show their art there and at the con-current Meadow Brook Historic
Races Auto Art Show that has been absent for more than five years.
Welcome to the new electronic issue of the afasJournal.com. AFAS Board of Directors member Jay
Koka is :: heading this effort with his Knightbridge Publishing group supplying
the thrust and talent. The print AFAS Journal is on a sabbatical, the back
issues will still be available, see Index listing in current afasJournal.com here :: Back Issues.
Although the afasJournal.com format is by necessity different from the print
AFAS Journal, the content and editorial direction shall continue to supply
the
readership with the current and historical auto art scene and bring the
latest
AFAS efforts as well as other internationally recognized artists to your
attention.
Here's what's in store for the inaugural edition of the afasJournal.com. The artist preview for the :: 25th Anniversary showing at Pebble Beach is a
peek at
what will be shown and available at the August 14th and 15th show.
The AFAS Journal Number 8, fall 1990 featured a profile on AFAS sculptor
artist
Larry Braun. This edition brings a :: 20-year update of Larry's work. Larry
is now
an officer of AFAS and has the treasurers' duties, and is a valuable
member of
AFAS. Co-incidentally in the AFAS Journal of 20 years ago is a profile on Bob
Larivee who we mentioned in the Meadow Brook Segment of this column. I
might add
that the AFAS Index is a quick checklist to find your artist/event interests here :: Back Issues.
We continue from a twenty-year plus member to the most recent member who
joined
us last year at Pebble Beach. :: Gary Whinn, our newest member is from the UK
and
has established his work on both sides of the pond. A great welcome to
Gary and
wife Lorraine who reside at Bwich-y-ffidd, Powys, Wales, UK. Please
don't ask me
to pronounce the address.
Dennis Hoyt has a new feature column :: Contours where he opines on sculpture as he
sees it
and knowing Dennis, as many of you do, it will be a hoot to hear Hoyt's
take on
the state of the automotive art sculpture scene.
So, dear reader- we've gone full circle, from the beginning at Meadow
Brook to
farewell to same to welcoming newest member Gary Whinn and our publishing
step
to the future courtesy of Koka and CO. Stay tuned (?)
