Volume2, Number 1 March 2011

The 2011 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance kicks off the show season of AFAS. This is Bill Warner's 16th Annual Event and will be held Sunday March 13th on the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club grounds at Amelia Island, Florida. AFAS has been proud to be associated with this premiere Concours since its inception. Bill Warner is a pretty special fellow with a keen sense of auto history, both racing and design. He knows how to mix and match different styles and eras. Every year, the Concours field is a surprise for the eyes and ears, for this Concours has, since day one, celebrated the Race Car. All Grand Marshalls have been figures of racing import. This year will have three time CART Champion and Indy 500 winner, Bobby Rahal. To signal the start of the Concours one LISTENS to the honored Racer drive one of his cars to position, and, unique to the Amelia Concours, let the show begin!

It is in this atmosphere that the AFAS show displays, it's quite a magic surrounding. Please visit us on the showgrounds on Sunday March 13. We will be showing Thursday March 10 through Saturday March 12 in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Plaza Ballroom. This is an excellent opportunity to preview the show and meet the artists in a relaxed atmosphere, not to mention acquire your choice of art work.

Featured guest artist, Danny Pro, from Las Vegas, NV will present his interpretive illuminated sculpture. Attending AFAS artists are listed in this issue of afasJournal.com.

As of this writing, I'm pleased to learn of Tony Clark's reportage
from England and the Continent will join the afasJournal.com line-up. Tony's contributions to the AFAS Journal as our Continetal Correspondent made each issue informative and extra special.

Also in this issue, AFAS members Tom Hale and Charles Maher will be highlighted.

I'm often asked what is the philosophy or credo of the AFAS?
It is a subject even discussed currently by our members as we approach our 30th year of our founding. Perhaps we can find direction by looking back to where we started. May I suggest the following, reprinted from the first AFAS book, Automotive Fine Art-AFAS. The book was published in 1987 (and is still available).

Dedicated to AFAS Members Emeritus John Burgesss, Walter Gotschke and Peter Helk: each a gentleman and inspiration to us all.

We the members of the Society of Automobile Fine Artists, in order to establish a standard of excellence in the field of automotive art, do hereby proclaim: To endeavor to excel in the artistic representation of the automobile and pursue this excellence as established in the greatness of Peter Helk, Walter Gotschke, Gordon Crosby etc.

That we do profess to have a genuine admiration and affection of the automobile, it's past, present and future; and to the people and events that have made it so; and to share our efforts, through our work and co-operation, with those who would share our admiration and affections.

AFAS Preamble August 1983

This statement made sense to us then, still sounds good today.
