With the 'push' to complete my exhibit piece for our annual AFAS exhibit at Pebble Beach the 3rd article for Contours column got pushed back, I apologize. I'll try not to let this happen again. ONWARD!

I would like to examine one aspect of three-dimensional art I believe is paramount, especially when it comes to Automotive Art. I do believe that Automotive Art should be referred to simply as art. It seems though, that the art world likes to categorize and group art into collective niches, but I digress.

Webster's Dictionary defines the word tactile: as something designed to be perceived by touch.

'Perceived by Touch', exactly!! That's my point. Sculpture should have tactility; while other aspects of sculpture are important, i.e., materials, site (environment), subject matter, the most important aspect to me is the tactility of the piece itself. In my opinion it should draw the viewer in, make them want to 'touch it'. Otherwise, what is the purpose? When one can engage the viewer physically, emotionally, intellectually, because of its tactility, everyone is richer because of it.

One exception to this line of thought would be certain kinetic sculptures. One piece that comes to mind was the recent work created by the design studio Art+Com, in conjunction with BMW. This piece was, in my opinion, brilliant. The 714 silver metallic balls on string controlled by computers moved vertically to create an infinite number of silhouettes and shapes. This installation explored new directions for spatial relationships of geometry, frequency, angular resolution, and Euclidean space.
